AuthorAloha! My name is Karli Rose Keanu, I am a sophomore at Kamehameha Kapālama High School and I live in Kaneʻohe. Homelessness is a big problem in Hawaii today and I have seen many people help them and give them what they need. So they have inspired me to help them by doing something small and hopefully later on, to have a big healthy impact on their lives. Iʻve seen homeless and the main problem I see that they have is hygiene. They obviously donʻt have bathrooms so its hard for them to keep up with staying clean. My partner and I want to create hygiene pack that will have all the necissities for their hygiene. Week 1:Through out the week we made a plan on what we are going to do and when we will set out to get what we need for the hygiene packs. While my partner and I started to create our plan of what we will do, we saw that it might be difficult to make time and to see each other on the weekends. We both have crazy schedules and we live on opposite sides of the island but we figured if we make time and do not procrastonate we can do it.
Will we have an impact on the homeless with our project? I do hope so, because our whole purpose is to spread aloha and make them feel as if people care. My personal goal for this project is to put a smile on every homeless person that me and my partner come across. I hope to have a positive impact on the homeless and that they will see that this is coming from the good of our hearts and that they can do something to better themselves and that they can get out of the problem that they are in. Week 2:
This week we will create notes of encouragment to go in the hygiene packs. We highly think that encouragment will be the best things for the homeless. We want to help provide them with hygiene necessities as well as a helpful tip and a word of encourgment. I think the best way to help someone out is to give them hope and a sense of faith. Making the words of encouragment was kind of tough because at first I really didn't know what to put on the cards but I began thinking about scriptures from the bible and searched it up on the internet. I wanted the cards to be simple but yet meaningful.
One thing that runs through my mind is how will I approach the homeless and what I will say. I am kind of shy at first when it comes to talking to other people and I don't really know what to say, so I decided that I will plan out what I will say before going to meet the homeless. I hope to make a difference and hope that i am comfortable talking to them and giving them the hygiene packs. Week 3:We will put the hygiene packs together. My partner will get the supplies needed and we will combine the notes of encouragment and all supplies. This was kind of hard because my partner was on a trip so we couldn't combine the hygiene packs or get the right supplies needed so it'll push us back a week or so. Our schedules are very different so that's a big factor in our project. We already have an idea of what we want in the hygiene packs so when we do have the chance to get the supplies it will be very easy to do so.
I wonder what if the homeless do not want the hygiene packs. It kind of worries me if they do not want it, I do not want them rejecting the offer because it would make me feel junk and not to sure what I should do. We will be passing out 20 hygiene packs due to financial issues but I do hope that we have an impact. I hope that every offer we make they will take it and be pleased with the packs. Week 4:This week will pass out the hygiene packs to communities. We still need to get the supplies for the hygiene packs, we are backed up only one week but we plan on passing them out soon. This past week me and my partner were not able to meet up and put the hygiene packs together but we did get all the supplies we needed. Next week is when we will be able to meet up and put the hygiene packs together and soon pass them out.
How many hygiene packs will we have to pass out? Because of money we decided to only make 20 hygiene packs. We wanted to do more but we didn't have money and it would be easier on us to do so. We will still have an impact on those 20 people that we give them to, I hope that we do make a difference with these people that we come by. We finally have our hygiene packs, so soon we will be able to pass them out. Week 5Unfortunately we were not able to pass out the hygiene packs yet but we are planning to pass out the hygiene packs that are already put together this week or next week based on our schedules. We were able to successfully put all supplies together to create the completed hygiene packs. I noticed that my partner and I really had to rush things all together to get the supplies needed. I really hope that we do pass out the hygiene packs so that we can complete our project on time.
What if we are not able to pass out the hygiene packs before the deadline of the project? This is a question that keeps running through my mind because I am nervous about our final grade and what we will get. But i've come to realize that it doesn't matter about the grade we get in the end. We set out to do something and we had made the packs already so we can always set out to pass out the packs later. My partner and I's schedules were very crazy and different so it is and was hard to plan things. Also we don't have the same classes so it was even harder to talk in person. But all I can say is that we can always pass out the packs later when we can make time and when it will be easier on the both of us. Week 6During this week we plan on finishing our project on the website and continue to make edits and critique our work. We set out to make a pamphlet to show and summarize our project and what we did, our goals, troubles and accomplishments. Also my partner and I have to make a slideshow to also summarize what we did, basically everything that's going to be on our pamphlet will be on our slide show.
Me and my partner hope to inspire our classmates as much as they will inspire us to make a change in this world and make a difference. I hope to see that the homeless population decreases or at least that they will make a change in their own lives to do something better for them. Week 7This week we planned to finish up our website, slide show and pamhplet. Last week we were not able to pass out the hygiene packs as we hoped to but we gave it to a homeless shelter in Town. When we gave it to a lady there she was so happy and joyful and she really liked the words of encouragement that was in there because she said it was really thoughtful and it meant sincerity. She was happy to see the hygiene packs and it meant a lot to her.
Was our project successful? Although we were not able to pass out the hygiene packs our selves like we had hopped, we were able to give it to a homeless shelter and we still made a difference. I thought our project was very successful and I was happy to know that we made a difference. We only made 20 hygiene packs which was still a lot and we were able to give it to a homeless shelter. |
